The People Who Look Perfect at the Beginning

Sometimes the people who hurt us the most are the ones who looked perfect in the beginning.

You’re dating someone who seems perfect. He cooks, helps with household chores without being asked, comes home early, keeps you updated, and makes you feel loved and secure.

You proudly tell your friends how wonderful he is. One friend simply nods the same friend who once warned you to be careful.

Then life changes.

You get pregnant. The morning sickness begins. Responsibilities increase. Stress enters the picture. Suddenly, the person you thought you knew starts showing a different side. The charming partner becomes someone almost unrecognizable.

A new season has arrived, and with it, the real test of character.

This reminds me of marathon training.

When preparing for a marathon, the training plan may start with a simple 5 km run. At first, you feel confident and think, I can do much more than this.

Then the training progresses.

You reach those 20 km, 25 km, and 28 km long runs and quickly realize that the coach knew exactly what they were doing. The plan wasn’t designed for the easy days; it was designed to prepare you for the hard ones.

Life works the same way.

Too often, we ignore warnings because we are focused on appearances and good moments. We choose the superficial over the substantial. Yet a partner whether a man or woman can  either build you up or reduce you to nothing in a matter of moments. When that happens, life can spiral quickly.

As you run the marathon of life, take warnings seriously. Pay attention to patterns. Follow the training plan. Learn from those who have gone before you.

If a warning sign appears once, take note. If it appears twice, don’t ignore it.

Sometimes the wisest decision is to abort the mission before the race becomes a disaster.

Choose wisely. Your future self will thank you.

In running and in life, the easy miles don’t reveal character the hard miles do. Choose your path, and your people, wisely.

At RunfitSol, we often talk about training plans, long runs, and race day. But some of the most important lessons from running have nothing to do with running at all.

Yours truly
